Doctors are Fostering Neocolonialism

Nigeria is still being colonised, doctors are not helping matters. It’s true that we gained our independence two scores, a decade and nine years ago, almost three scores now. We have remained in dependence, a more polite word is underdeveloped.

The world powers continually use economic, political, cultural or other pressures to control or influence our country. The intellectuals eagerly dance to this music _ willingly enslaving themselves in the pursuit of a brighter future and economic stability. The founding fathers of our nation, solemnly affirmed to “…Give me liberty or give me death!” We, the children of that country, so conceived and so dedicated that be now, have also sworn that the yoke of freedom is too heavy.

Doctors have willingly subjected themselves to this new form of slavery, jumping at the littlest opportunity to leave the country. “The new wind is blowing through this continent, and whether we like it or not, this growth of national consciousness is a political fact. We must all accept it as a fact and our national policies must take account of it” (Harold Macmillan, The wind of Change, 1960), we must not be confused about what freedom entails.

Indifference is not a response nor a beginning, but an end. I know a handful of doctors are planning to leave the country in its present state. Those are the handfuls fostering neocolonialism _ willingly enslaving themselves.

It’s a new month, new decisions are to be made.

  1. most Doctors feel Nigeria as a country have failed to take good care of them, especially in the wages they receive probably after being employed. That should be the major reason they live to these developed countries where they get higher income. The Nigerian Government should endeavor to see to the good well being of its doctors and other medical practitioners. In another development, there is need to enlighten Doctors and medical students on the need for patriotism.A patriotic Doctor wouldn’t leave his country, he would want to see that the citizens are healthy, that’s the core reason of being a Doctor, ensuring people are ailment free.Nigerian Government should enhance Doctors’ patriotism.

  2. It really is something to be worried about cos if our doctors are leaving the country, how then will the country get better. It is said that health is wealth, if we keep losing our doctors, the country will keep getting poorer.
The government through the ministry of health needs to do something. It’s really nice of you to notice and bring it to light.

  3. Well, the view you get depends on your perspective. I proposed and hosted a Global webinar last year on a Research and Emigration of Doctors.

There are many factors that determine Doctors emigration especially from countries like Nigeria. Gross under funding of Health Sector, WHO recommemds at least 21 percent of the budget for Health, in the last 7 years the highest Nigeria has pegged was 6.7 percent, which is very poor. It pains every health practitioner to see patients that would have been treated well, but couldn’t due to poor and unavailable facilities.

There is no Security of Doctors, like it is only in Nigeria I see and hear of Doctors been kidnapped, like this is ridiculous, and the Doctors now have to start pleading to government, carry placards in a protest who does this??

Insurance of the Doctor, if a Doctor gets sick treating a patient, he will pay for his bill, and this us wrong.

A Doctor in Nigeria is paid less than 5k for Harzard allowance, but a lecturer in the University takes more than 20k for harzard allowance, what Harzard are they exposed to??

See the way the Nigeria system treats Doctors, you let them go months without pay, even when they have to give their all to the practise, like I know a lot of Doctors who have sacrificed time, comfort, money, satisfaction e.t.c. and still no pay, it’s bad. Will a Doctor drive to the Filling station and get fuel for free because he is a Doctor, or will he get services for free. Or do you want the Doctor to start begging for funds for his upkeep to stay alive, haba. Please.

We are our problem in this country, until we go back to the drawing board, we will continue going in circles.

    1. “We are our problem in this country …” You analysed intelligently, I see you point. I will give it to you. I will need to extend my post, cite examples, remind the Doctors the benefits of staying back despite this challenges, you rightly pointed.
